Annelies A Novel Audible Audio Edition David R Gillham Saskia Maarleveld Penguin Audio Books Reviews

  • Two years ago- 2017 - the German railroad, Deutsche Bahn, proposed naming its new highspeed trains after important figures in German history. Some of the names proposed were "Konrad Adenauer", "Karl Marx", "Ludwig Erhard", and..."Anne Frank". Evidently not everyone at Deutsche Bahn was asleep at the proverbial wheel and the sheer wrongheadedness over naming a train after Anne Frank was pointed out. Officials took the name out of contention for a train a few months later and some other names like "Willy Brandt" and "Marlene Dietrich" were tactfully substituted for the "Anne Frank Unlimited" (to Auschwitz?). All this goes to show, though, the power that the two words "Anne" and "Frank" still play in our world today. She has lately been the subject of at least one work of non-fiction, and several novels. The latest one, David Gillham's "Annelies A Novel" has just been published.

Like it's recent predecessors, Gillham's book presupposes that one of the other residents of the Amsterdam attic hiding place - besides Otto Frank - survived their ordeal. Ellen Feldman's novel, "The Boy Who Loved Anne Frank", has Peter surviving Mauthausen and going to the United States and making a life there for himself, while in 2013, author Jillian Cantor wrote about Anne's sister, Margot's new life in the US, in her novel, "Margot A Novel". David Gillham's novel follows the same plot line - survival of the camps and adjusting to a new life.

"Annelies" - Anne Frank's full first name - is a pretty good book. Gillham uses parts of Anne's diary as the beginnings of his short chapters, which together show a bit of her life in the attic, but more specifically her immediate post-war life in Amsterdam. Anne tries to make sense of both her own survival and the deaths of her mother and sister. She also tries to decide what she wants to do next in her life. Her diaries, supposedly, had not survived the raid on the Attic, but later they are returned to her. In some ways, her post-war life is that of a normal teenager and in others it's the life of a concentration camp survivor with her Auschwitz numbered tattoo as an ever-present reminder of her past.

Like a few other reviewers of "Annelies", I had an uneasy feeling about the novel. David Gillham tries to reimagine Anne's life - as others have done with Margot and Peter - with a happier ending. But should we be doing that? Or is it just more respectful for Anne and her compatriots be left to reside in their own reality?
  • Annelies is a compelling, intense read. I simply couldn't tear myself from it. I was torn for most of the reading, however, in my feelings toward the character of Anne. I felt compassion and empathy for all she endured, but she also annoyed me. Anne spends a great deal of the novel, raging about, as if she was the only one who suffered, and being quite nasty. She does act like the entitled, spoiled, cosseted child her stepmother accuses her of being. The author includes intriguing twists in the story. I applaud him for taking on this incredible task of writing a what if story about Holocaust icon such as Anne Frank. I do wish the author had included a brief bibliography at the end, to share he titles he read and researched. Thanks to Penguin First Read for the advance copy.
  • I was glued to this book. There was, in reading this novel, a feeling of healing I do have to agree with another reviewer that I wish it had told more about the adult life of Anne. In particular I wonder what books she wrote? But perhaps it was wise to leave this to our imagination .
In these times one often reads things into books that may not have been intended but in the portrayal of postwar Netherlands and the deportation of German nationals including Jews back to Germany I was reminded of the terrible injustice of deportations of immigrants by ICE to countries they fled to save their lives.
The author takes risks in removing the iconization around Anne Frank yet respecting and remembering her and her family.
In this time of rising hate we must remember those lost This book helps. Never again!
  • Anne Frank has always been of interest, and Mr. Gillham creates a heartbreaking re-telling of what she and her family endured and what her life could have been had she survived.

We follow Anne before, during, and after the war that describes her family's confinement and the horrors they endured at the concentration camps.

Mr. Gillham brings Anne back to life and fictitiously lets us see how she is trying to put her life back together as she reunites with her father who in actuality is the only surviving family member.

The detailed writing and re-telling will hold your interest from the minute you begin reading.

This book is a tribute to all of those who suffered, survived, perished, and helped in any way possible during history's darkest hours.

Mr. Gillham did an outstanding job of researching as well as using a creative method of portraying Anne Frank's life as it may have been even though she did not survive the Holocaust.

Through Mr. Gillham’s marvelous writing style we are transported back in time as we experience what Anne experienced during her captivity and as she tries to re-enter her previous life that is always filled with the presence and reminders of her captors and how she had to comply.

ANNELIES is a beautiful, heartfelt book you will want to absorb with attention to every detail.

Anne seems as though she was and would have been a feisty young lady that the world has missed and could have learned from. 5/5

This book was given to me as ARC by the author in exchange for an honest review.

Brimley Manor, home to an eccentric museum of oddities from its owner's lifetime of exotic travels also holds dark secrets. When a suspicious fire breaks out, the biggest question must be ... was it just an accident? Sarah and Jack think not. As they begin to explore the history and people of Brimley Manor, they soon learn that this very curious place might also be quite deadly ...

Set in the sleepy English village of Cherringham, the detective series brings together an unlikely sleuthing duo English web designer Sarah and American ex-cop Jack. Thrilling and deadly - but with a spot of tea - it's like Rosamunde Pilcher meets Inspector Barnaby. Each of the self-contained episodes is a quick read for the morning commute, while waiting for the doctor, or when curling up with a hot cuppa.

Co-authors Neil Richards (based in the UK) and Matthew Costello (based in the US), have been writing together since the mid 90's, creating content and working on projects for the BBC, Disney Channel, Sony, ABC, Eidos, and Nintendo to name but a few. Their transatlantic collaboration has underpinned scores of TV drama scripts, computer games, radio shows, and the successful crime fiction series Cherringham.

"One of the funniest and most unusual books of the year....Gross, educational, and unexpectedly sidesplitting."―Entertainment Weekly

Stiff is an oddly compelling, often hilarious exploration of the strange lives of our bodies postmortem. For two thousand years, cadavers―some willingly, some unwittingly―have been involved in science's boldest strides and weirdest undertakings. In this fascinating account, Mary Roach visits the good deeds of cadavers over the centuries and tells the engrossing story of our bodies when we are no longer with them.

Read Stiff The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers 8601300104782 Medicine Health Science Books

"First of all the good, I like the history and all the research she did. I love hearing about the history of death and mourning, the history of medical research and organ donation. I don't mind the "gross" stuff about human bodies or the "irreverence", that's the point of this book to explore these topics that we shy away from as a society. In fact I find it slightly annoying that she constantly emphasizes how weird people probably think she is for asking certain questions or how much she seems to coddle the reader about some of the more explicit parts of death and cadavers. What I really find disturbing is the many times she talks about the horrible, painful, and mostly useless studies that we've done on LIVING animals. She talks about dead bodies with respect, but the casual horrific details about puppies having their heads sown onto other living dogs only to suffer and die over a matter of days... I just didn't expect that and it was fairly depressing. The experimentation on living animals seemed to be kind of a joke to her and it started to make me sick to my stomach and sort of ruined an otherwise fascinating book."

Stiff The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers 8601300104782 Medicine Health Science Books Reviews

  • Stiff The Curious Life of Human Cadavers is an example of a morbid topic turned into a page turning and ironically uplifting read. Stiff is very informative on the history and uses of cadavers while also providing entertainment through Roach’s unique style of writing. Additionally, the book contains numerous gory stories about blood and death, but the real meat of the book is in Roach’s main point of the history and uses of cadavers. She uses real examples of scientists and researchers performing horrific operations on human remains in order to learn the anatomy of our complex species. The chapters are deliberate and in depth and they address a wide range of topics from impact studies for car safety to human composting as a new means of disposal. Roach is additionally accommodating enough to include informative footnotes in places where the subject deviates from common knowledge. One of the best things about this book, besides just the mere content, is the witty style in which Roach employs. She seamlessly integrates jokes and humor into her writing of dead people without being the least bit disrespectful, in my opinion. To make its case, Stiff appeals to both medical interests in the surgeries described and to historical ones in its ample amount of sources on how humans first discovered how our anatomy was designed. The prominence of death in the book however does not lower its accomplishments by any means. If anything, death and dying opens up a new conversation of what to do after we die. The only piece of cautionary advice I have is that certain parts are a bit too bloody and gory, which may lead to sensitive readers not being able to read every page. To oversimplify, Stiff is one of a kind and can be thoroughly enjoyed no matter what medical expertise one has. While prior knowing of the book’s anatomy knowledge is useful in understanding the kind of value it has, it can be advantageous for a multitude of audiences.
  • Having read Mary Roach’s newest book, Grunt, in which she talks about the science of keeping soldiers alive, I decided to read her first one, Stiff, for two reasons. One was to see how much she’d changed as an author, but two – and the bigger reason – was a fascination with the subject. Stiff‘s subtitle is The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers, and the book is about exactly that what happens to our remains after we die? Like she did with Grunt (and, I’m presuming, all of her books), Roach divides the book into independent chapters, each focusing on different aspects. There’s the bodies that end up in mortuary schools, as well as those that end up dissected by medical students. There are cadavers used as crash testers, those that end up at the Body Farm (where decay is studied, among other things), those that are used to help understand airplane crashes…and those that were used to understand what happened to Jesus and others who were crucified. And there’s much more to be found here, including bodies as compost, as art, and more.

It’s a fascinating subject, and one that put Roach on the map – and having read the book, it’s not hard to see why. Done wrongly, the book could seem insensitive, ghoulish, or just depressing. But Roach celebrates these cadavers, reminding the reader just how much has been gained from this research and just how important these bodies have been to not only medicine, but to our society as a whole. At the same time, she never shies away from the discomfort people feel; indeed, one of the most compelling threads in each chapter is discussing with the various people she meets how they manage to maintain a proper emotional balance when they’re working with the dead all the time.

Roach is more of a presence in Stiff than she is in Grunt; it feels like more of a first book, and something she might grow away from as she went. But that also feels like a key part of why the book works; after all, death is a fundamentally personal event, and there’s little way to read Stiff and not spend time thinking about what you would want done with your own remains, be it cremation, burial, donation, or more. And Roach builds her own debate into the book, concluding the book with a chapter that finds her pondering what to do with her own remains, having done all these studies and researches into our possible fates.

But lest that sound too heavy, Stiff is every bit as engaging and fun as you would hope from Roach’s reputation. Her digressive footnotes and odd asides are still evident, her willingness to ask questions no less charming, and her ability to bring a light tone to even heavy subject matters no less welcome. More than that, she finds depth and thoughtfulness to discuss beyond what you would expect, to the point where you get the impression that she could write a whole second book about bodies and never run out of things to say. That she does all this while being incredibly informative, demonstrating a gift for conveying complex things quickly, and managing to even tell stories, is just testament to her skills as a writer, and the deservedness of her reputation.
  • First of all the good, I like the history and all the research she did. The experimentation on living animals seemed to be kind of a joke to her and it started to make me sick to my stomach and sort of ruined an otherwise fascinating book.
  • Have you ever wondered what happens to the body when it dies? Or how cadavers donated to science are used? Have you ever wondered if embalming keeps your body from ever decaying? These are just a few of the questions covered in this book.

I absolutely love Mary Roach’s writing style! She’s hilarious without being disrespectful, and I can’t imagine anyone being able to write about this subject as well as she does. She keeps the reader engaged and asks the questions we are all curious about. . .well at least the questions I was curious about. This was a fascinating and at times a disturbing read. If you get nauseous easy this may not be the book for you. This may also not be the book for you if you are an animal lover. There are several sections that discuss experiments on animals – the same or similar experiments that are being done on cadavers – that was very difficult for me to read.

Barron AP Statistics Martin Sternstein PhD Books Reviews

  • I am new to teaching AP Statistics at a high school. This book is an excellent resource and includes up-to-date information on the latest nuances of the College Board's exam. I don't know how I could have taught my students without this review book to guide me.

I'd also like to mention that the author took the time to respond personally to my questions, which was extraordinarily kind for a college professor whose books reach thousands of students every year.
  • Got a 5 using this. From my experience, this book was harder than the actual exam, which was good.
  • This study guide worked well for my daughter who did well on her AP Stat exam.
  • Very good book
  • Thank you.
  • Good work all over.

Part ode to building something with one’s hands in the modern age, part celebration of the beauty and function of boats, and part moving father-daughter story, How to Build a Boat is a bold adventure.

Once an essential skill, the ability to build a clinker boat, first innovated by the Vikings, can seem incomprehensible today. Yet it was the clinker, with its overlapping planks, that afforded us access to the oceans, and its construction has become a lost art that calls to the do-it-yourselfer in all of us. John Gornall heard the call.

A thoroughly unskilled modern man, Gornall set out to build a traditional wooden boat as a gift for his newborn daughter. It was, he recognized, a ridiculously quixotic challenge for a man who knew little about woodworking and even less about boat-building. He wasn’t even sure what type of wood he should use, the tools he’d need, or where on earth he'd build the boat. He had much to consider…and even more to learn.

But, undaunted, he embarked on a voyage of rediscovery, determined to navigate his way back to a time when we could fashion our future and leave our mark on history using only time-honored skills and the materials at hand. His journey began in East Anglia, on England’s rocky eastern coast. If all went according to plan, it would end with a great adventure, as father and daughter cast off together for a voyage of discovery that neither would forget, and both would treasure until the end of their days.

How to Build a Boat celebrates the art of boat-building, the simple pleasures of working with your hands, and the aspirations and glory of new fatherhood. John Gornall “tells the inspiring story of how even the least skilled of us can make something wonderful if we invest enough time and love” (The Daily Mail) and taps into the allure of an ancient craft, interpreting it in a modern way, as tribute to the generations yet to come. “Both the book, and place, are magical” (The Sunday Telegraph).

A sweeping, interdisciplinary history of the world's third-largest river, a potent symbol across South Asia and the Hindu diaspora.

Originating in the Himalayas and flowing into the Bay of Bengal, the Ganges is India's most important and sacred river. In this unprecedented work, historian Sudipta Sen tells the story of the Ganges, from the communities that arose on its banks to the merchants who navigated its waters, and the way it came to occupy center stage in the history and culture of the subcontinent.

Sen begins his chronicle in prehistoric India, tracing the river's first settlers, its myths of origin in the Hindu tradition, and its significance during the ascendancy of popular Buddhism. In the following centuries, Indian empires, Central Asian regimes, European merchants, the British Empire, and the Indian nation-state all shaped the identity and ecology of the river.

Weaving together geography, environmental politics, and religious history, Sen offers a remarkable portrait of one of the world's largest and most densely populated river basins.

Award-winning author Angeline Fortin returns with a steamy, heart-warming new series where reader favorite Auld Donell is once again up to his old tricks changing an uncertain future by altering the past and challenging three young women to test the limitations of time and explore the possibilities of love.

She wanted a love for all time.

A life of love lost and heartbreak has cursed the women in Bronte Hughes’s family for generations. When she discovers a device that allows her to slip through time, Bronte decides the key to obtaining true love for herself lies in mending the tragedies of the past and restoring a legacy of love fate has robbed from her family…beginning with saving her great-great grandfather from setting sail on the ill-fated voyage of the Titanic.

He searched for a life with purpose.

Good friends and a loving family provided Tris MacKintosh with ample duty and obligation but none of the challenge and purpose he yearned for in life. When a mysterious young woman appears in a suspiciously timely fashion—not once, but twice—to save his closest friend from death, he’s presented with more intrigue than he’s experienced in years. Contributing to the war effort against Germany once seemed his best chance to live with purpose and make a mark…

However, with Bronte at his side, Tris soon realizes there is a greater opportunity awaiting him. A chance to be a part of a love to last forever, to change the future… and to save the world.

A Scot to Remember Something About a Highlander Book 1 edition by Angeline Fortin Romance eBooks Reviews

  • This book read almost as if two people wrote it. It wasn't until I was a little more than halfway through that I stopped wondering if I should put it down and felt like the characters were finally starting to make sense. This surprised me, because I have read other books by this author and really enjoyed them. Her "Question" series especially, which stuck to one time period, was much more consistent stylistically.

In this latest book, at first I wanted to shake Bronte, the heroine. She was all over the map emotionally, but we didn't hear much internal commentary from her about WHY she felt the way she felt about Tris ... She was crazy about him, she wanted him, she was annoyed by him, she thought he was cold. Was it because of Jack? Because she was a die-are feminist? Because she had a poor sense of self?

I was also annoyed with how -- for all her knowledge of history, her aunt's diary, and clothing from the earlier era -- she used 2019 slang and curse words, acted surprised when she was in 1914 and learned a 15-mile drive would take hours, and was offended when men held the door for her or acted in some other way that was just what a gentleman of that era would do or say. Girlfriend! Why were you surprised that men were chauvinists in 1914? You should have expected that! Bronte just came across as kind of -- well, stupid-- every time she argued, "I can do this myself." For someone who worked in the theater, she seemed pretty clueless as to how to act in a time-appropriate way.

Finally, somewhere in the middle of the house party, when Bronte and Tris were (SPOILER ALERT) finally together, her behavior started to be a little more consistent. I think when the author was working with characters from an earlier time period she was more comfortable with the story. (And I loved the descriptions of the outfits!)

Another reason I thought about giving up on the book was that it was greatly in need of some editing. There were commas where there didn't need to be commas and lack of commas when commas were critical. A few dangling modifiers that made for unfortunate, humorous mental pictures. Wrong use of words (using "ostentatiously" when the word should've been "ostensibly.") But the most glaring error was when Bronte talked about love letters exchanged between Elizabeth Barrett Browning and Robert Frost. That would have been hard, given that EBB died in 1861 and Frost was born in 1874. A few typos here and there are understandable but this went way beyond typos, and when errors keep popping up, I'm totally distracted and wonder if it's worth my time. A good editor would have spotted these many distracting issues.

I would have liked to understand more about Hazel and Henry Why was [bad guy] going after Henry in the first place? And what ended up happening to Henry? And will Phineas show up in the future? -- no hints there! And what's the story with Hannah -- a sweet and attractive character How did she and Hazel become friends in the first place, and what happened to her?

But bottom line, I liked the book -- such a clever idea -- and I ended up liking Bronte and Tris a lot. BUT -- even though I have been really critical, I was engaged enough with the characters, their relationship, the steamy buildup of their romance and wanting to know what would happen next -- that I would recommend this book, as well as previous novels by this author. This one just could have used a little smoothing out. I hope there are more books in this series to answer some of my questions.
  • I’ve read nearly all Angeline Fortin’s books and enjoyed them particularly the Laird series. This one was interesting but disjointed... No explanation was given as to why Henry was singled out. I’ll reread it as I usually do in hopes I missed the explanation but...
  • A great time travel tale but, to me, kind of a new twist in that Bronte travels between times quite frequently which I am not used robin the genre. Trying g to keep all this from Tris is almost impossible but she does. Their journey is full of intrigue, suspense, adventure, mayhem and romance. Enjoy!
  • What would life be like without this rascally Scot? This book of Ms. Fortin's stretches the imagination and brings the reader into a time period rarely addressed in writing. While I was initially disappointed about the lack of lairds and castles, I did get my castle in the middle of the book! And who could not possibly fall in love with Bronte and Tris. I mean, come on….they grasp your heart. Well worth the purchase and the read. I've added it to my "keep" collection.
  • This is a fun and interesting story. I thought the characters were quite interesting and the story line is great. Would definitely recommend reading this book. Can't wait until the next book drops!!
  • I looked forward to this book coming out and it didn't disappoint. Boy did the sparks fly between Tris and Bronte.
So happy to see Donell in another book.
  • Weaving a compelling story that Kees the reader engaged and guessing is an art. You will not be disappointed in Something About a Highlander.
  • The first 5 chapters difficult to stay interested..lots of jumping around..but then it settled in and was great! Loved seeing Donell again too!
